Music and Family

Hi! I am going to interview my mom. My mom was born in 1962. She grew up around music for as long as she can remember. Her brother was in a band since she was nine. Her mother enjoyed singing and dancing and her grandfather played the ukelele and sang.  She gave piano lessons a try but only took for about 2 years. She prefers listing to music rather than playing the music.

Let’s get into the interview.

Jessica: What was your first memory that involved music?

Mom: I remember going into my brother’s bedroom when I was around 5 and listening to rock music with him. It was an opportunity to spend time with him and be a part of his life being that he was 6 years older than me.

Jessica: Do you remember what you would listen to with him?

Mom: Yes. Led Zeppelin, The Who, and Pink Floyd to name a few.

Here is one her bothers songs.

Jessica: How did that shape your music taste?

Mom: Having grown up around that type of music is what I enjoyed and continue to. It was a way of forming a connection with my brother and his friends.

Jessica: When you got older what were some of the bands you enjoyed?

Mom: Aerosmith, Deep purple, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Black Sabbath, and Yes. Yes was one of my favorites.

Jessica: What did your parents think of your music taste?

Mom: My mom enjoyed some of the same music. My dad’s taste was completely different from mine, but he didn’t have an opinion on my taste.

Jessica: Did you go to any concerts growing up?

Mom: Yeah! I went a lot of concerts mostly with my brother and his friends.

Jessica: What were a few of your favorite concerts?

Mom: Blue Oyster Cult, Kiss, ZZ Top, AC/DC and Heart

Jessica: Do you still enjoy going to concerts?

Mom: Yes! In the past few years, I have seen Alice Cooper, Motley Crue, Megadeth, Joe Bonamassa, and Iron Maiden.

Jessica: What is the next concert you have planned?

Mom: I’m going to see Metallica in May.

Jessica: It seems like you have enjoyed music throughout your life. I enjoyed interviewing you.

END

I loved hearing my mom’s view of music and how it shaped her. I have enjoyed being raised around music and being able to listen to what I like. My parents preferences influenced my own.

  1. Hi Jessica! Your interview with your mom was really interesting. I find it really cool how her brother was in a band. The song you linked was great! I like the way you started the interview by asking her about her first musical memory. It helped me understand more about how her brother influenced her musical tastes. I’m also amazed with how consistent her taste in music remained throughout her life. It was the exact opposite from my interview with my dad.

As I go through, I listened to the Joe Bonamassa video, and he sounds like he is a great artist, and I never really heard of him! That is really go to be able to get to know your family!

  5. You were right, your mom does listen to a lot of the same music my dad does! I really love Roundabout, especially because it is in the show Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.

  6. Hi Jessica! Dang I can’t believe your mom was born in 1962. Your mom definitely seemed like a hard rock kind of fan. Also, I had never heard of Joe Bonamassa. It was definitely something new to listen to.

  7. This opened my eyes to a good bit of classic rock bands. I love that your mom isn't stopping her musical experiences just because she is getting older.
